Vesper™ makes that note because of what it is, not what it does. It is turned from solid brass with a thick wall and a wide flared mouth — the 15.5 cm sits at 900 g in the palm — and it is mass and wall thickness that give a bell a long fundamental instead of a thin tinny clack. Nothing is plated on. The brushed surface goes all the way through, so a scratch shows brass underneath rather than the steel that plated bells hide.

One flat tab is cast into the crown with a single hole through it, which is the whole mounting system. Thread a jute cord through it and hang it from a beam by the door, off the eave over the deck, on the garden gate, above the studio bench. Or leave it standing on a shelf and pick it up by the tab when you want it — supper, meditation, the end of the working day.

Three sizes, and they are genuinely different instruments: 10.5 cm for a bright close note on a desk or a door, 13.5 cm for the middle of a room, 15.5 cm for something you feel in your chest.

Care

It is unlacquered brass, so it will darken. If you like the patina, do nothing at all beyond an occasional dry cloth. If you want it bright again, a little brass polish on a soft cloth and a buff along the brushing takes it back — no wire wool, no scouring pad, they will cut through the satin grain. Hung outdoors it will weather faster and go browner, which most people find is the point; bring it in over a hard winter if you would rather keep it pale. Do not put it in a dishwasher.
