Threshold is a solid wood stool that crosses in an X and folds shut. A thick cotton-filled cushion sits across the top rails, softly tufted so it holds its shape rather than flattening into a board.

Slim enough to disappear behind a door when it's not needed, in four cushion colours over the same pale natural frame.

Overview

Every hallway has the same small indignity in it: the one-legged hop by the door, hand flat against the wall, trying to get a heel in.

A stool solves it, but most halls have no room to keep one standing about being solved. This is the version that closes and gets out of the way afterwards.

Care

Brush the cushion, spot-clean marks, and keep the wood out of standing water.

Why it is tufted

The cushion

Loose cotton in a plain sewn bag slumps to the edges within a month and leaves you sitting on the rails. Two shallow tufts pull the cover through the fill and hold it where it was put, which is the difference between a pad that lasts and one that becomes a cover with something in it.

It is a generous depth for a stool of this size — you sit on it, not against it — and the cover is drawn down over the ends of the top rails so the wood never meets the back of your leg.

Which is the whole argument

Shut, it nearly vanishes

Closed, the legs lie parallel and the whole thing is about as thick as a stack of books — thin enough to stand behind a door, slide beside a wardrobe, or go flat under a bed between visits.

That is what makes it usable in a narrow hall. A stool you have to walk around is a stool you eventually move to another room.

Rarely only the hall

Where else it ends up

It lands just under most sofa seats, so it works pulled up as a footrest. At the end of a bed it takes the clothes that never quite make it into the wardrobe. In a bathroom it holds a folded towel within arm's reach of the bath.

It is a seat first and a surface second, though. Put a full cup on the tufting and you will regret it.

My mother can use it

She is 79 and had stopped coming to us because of the boots. She can get down onto this and back up without a hand, which I did not expect from something that folds. That is the only review I have.

Wood is lighter in person

Mine came a touch paler and yellower than the pictures, closer to raw birch than to oak. It has warmed up a bit over a few months by the window. I would have picked the same again, just be ready for pale.

Solid after one quick fix

Mine had a slight wobble on day three. One turn with a flathead on each side and it has been silent since. Not a fault, just what wood does as it settles in.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight will it take?
There's no certified load rating, so we won't print one. Think of it as a seat for one adult sitting normally, rather than a step stool or a shared perch for two children.
What is the cover made of?
A soft woven fabric with a linen-like texture. We are not quoting a fibre percentage because we cannot verify one, and we would rather leave it unsaid than call it linen and be wrong.
Does the cushion come off?
It's fixed to the top rails with no zip, so it isn't designed to come off and wash — treat marks where they happen rather than planning on a machine cycle.
Does it need assembling?
It arrives closed in a flat box, ready to open — no bolts to find and no diagram to argue with.
Which wood is it?
Solid wood, pale and close-grained, with a clear matte finish. The species is not specified to us, so we are not naming one. Expect natural variation in tone between pieces.
