Overview

Most bedside lamps ask something of you at exactly the wrong moment. You are half asleep, the room is black, and you are patting down a cord for a switch the size of a pea — or you give up and hit the overhead, which snaps the whole room awake and costs you twenty minutes getting back down.

Stem™ has no cord and no switch to find. The top disc is the control: press the raised button once and it wakes at a low warm glow, press again to move through warm, neutral and cool white, then hold your finger down and the brightness slides smoothly up or down with no fixed steps to overshoot. The LEDs sit in a band underneath the disc, so the metal caps them — lying down you see a ring of light, never the source.

A 1800 mAh cell in the base runs it for up to 48 hours on a low setting and fills in about three hours, so there is no cable down the back of the nightstand and no argument about which side of the bed is nearest the socket. The base is solid machined metal and heavy for its size, so it stays where you put it — on the nightstand, the bath edge, the balcony table, or in your hand on the way down the hall at 2am.

Care

Wipe the metal with a dry or barely damp soft cloth. Brushed nickel shows fingerprints and a dry buff along the grain takes them straight off — nothing abrasive, no cream cleaner, no solvent. Clean the opal band with a soft dry cloth only. Never rinse it under a tap or leave it out in rain: there is a battery in the base. If you are putting it away for months, charge it to about half first and top it up two or three times a year rather than storing it flat.

Materials

Body in aluminium alloy with a brushed nickel finish — machined disc head, tapered stem and a weighted stepped base. Light band in opal acrylic over integrated LEDs, with three colour temperatures (warm, neutral and cool white) and stepless dimming, all driven by the touch button on the top disc. Built-in 1800 mAh rechargeable cell: roughly three hours to charge, up to 48 hours of light on a low setting. Charging port and a physical on/off switch on the underside of the base; USB charging cable included, no mains adapter needed. Ships boxed at 22 × 16 × 14 cm, 407 g.

Light where there is no socket

Nothing runs down the back of the nightstand and nothing has to be near a plug. Put it on the side the bed actually needs it, then carry it to the bath, the balcony or the kitchen when you want it there instead.

A hand tapping the disc top of the Stem lamp to dim it

Tap it, don't hunt for it

In the dark you reach for the top of the lamp, not for a switch on a wire. One press wakes it low; a held finger slides the brightness down to almost nothing so you can find a glass of water without waking properly.

Stem lamp with labels: tap to dim, three light tones, up to 48 hours per charge

Glow you see, LED you don't

The light comes out of an opal band set beneath the solid metal disc, so from a pillow you get a soft ring of warmth rather than a bright dot. Three tones let you keep it amber at night and take it to white when you are reading or working.

Finally something on that side of the bed

My side of the bed has no socket anywhere near it, so for two years I read by the overhead and then walked back across the room in the dark. This just sits there. I charge it maybe once a fortnight and I honestly forget it needs charging at all.

The dimming goes properly low

I was expecting three brightness steps and one of them to be too bright, which is what every other touch lamp I have owned does. You hold your finger down and it slides. At the very bottom of the warm setting it is barely more than a nightlight, which is exactly what I wanted for feeding at 3am.

Heavier than it looks, in a good way

It is smaller than I pictured but the base has real weight to it, so tapping the top does not push it around the table. Brushed finish picks up fingerprints if you grab the disc rather than the stem, but a dry cloth sorts it in a second.

Frequently asked questions

How long does one charge really last?
Up to 48 hours from the 1800 mAh cell if you keep it low and warm, which is how most people use a bedside lamp. Run it at full brightness on the cool setting and you will get a good deal less. A full charge takes about three hours over the included USB cable.
How do the three light tones work?
A short press on the raised button steps you through warm white, neutral white and cool white. Hold the same button and the brightness slides up or down without steps. There is also a physical on/off switch on the underside of the base if you want it truly off.
Is it bright enough to read by?
It is an ambience and close-work light rather than a room light. On the cool setting at full brightness it is comfortable for reading a book in your lap or for a bedtime story; it will not light a whole bedroom, and it is not meant to.
How big is it?
Small — a nightstand or side-table lamp, not a floor-standing one. It arrives boxed at 22 × 16 × 14 cm and weighs 407 g packed, and the base is solid metal so it feels heavier in the hand than it looks in a photograph.
Can I take it outside?
On a dry evening, yes — a balcony or a covered table is exactly what a cordless lamp is for. It is not weatherproof though, so bring it in before rain or dew and never leave it standing out overnight.
Does the finish mark easily?
Brushed nickel shows fingerprints where you touch it, mostly on the top disc. A dry cloth wiped along the grain clears them in a second. Avoid cream cleaners and solvents — they will dull the brushed grain and cannot be undone.
