A properly thick boxed floor cushion in warm walnut jumbo corduroy — roughly 10 cm of tufted loft, stitched right through in nine panels so it holds its height under a sitting adult instead of flattening out. Sit cross-legged at a low table, drop it on a hard kitchen chair, or stack two in a corner. Three sizes, one warm walnut that sits easily with oak and cream.

Overview

Sitting on the floor is lovely for about eleven minutes. Then the tailbone starts to complain, one ankle goes numb, and you spend the rest of the evening shifting your weight every thirty seconds until you give up and move to the sofa. There is nothing wrong with your floor. A floor is simply the wrong hardness for a human pelvis, and no rug, however thick, fixes that — what fixes it is height.

Settle™ is a proper boxed floor cushion rather than a flat pad: roughly 10 cm of tufted fill held in a squared-off shape with a pouffed side edge, so it keeps a whole adult clear of the ground instead of squashing to nothing in the first minute. Nine panels are stitched right through the cushion, top face to base, which locks the fill into nine compartments. That is what stops it drifting out to the edges and leaving you sitting in a hollow — the way almost every cheap floor cushion quietly fails after a fortnight.

The cover is jumbo corduroy: wide chunky ribs, a soft nap, in a warm walnut-caramel brown that sits easily next to oak, jute and cream plaster instead of fighting them. The rib has enough texture that two of them stacked in a corner look deliberate, which matters more than it sounds — a floor cushion spends most of its life not being sat on.

Three sizes, all the same thickness. 40 × 40 cm is a chair pad and a child’s floor seat. 45 × 45 cm is the one most people want — big enough to sit cross-legged without your knees hanging off, small enough to keep two beside a low table. 50 × 50 cm is the full floor seat, and doubles as a window-ledge pad or the top of a low footstool.

Care

Clean it in place — there is no removable cover. Vacuum the ribs with a brush head every few weeks, working along the direction of the rib rather than across it, because that is where dust and crumbs collect. Spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth and a little mild detergent, again along the rib, then press the moisture out with a dry towel and leave it to dry flat away from direct heat or a radiator, which can stiffen the nap. Do not put it in a washing machine or tumble dryer: the through-tufting will pull and the fill will felt into lumps, which is not recoverable. If the nap looks flattened where you sit, a soft brush lifts it again. Give it a firm slap and a turn every week or two to even the fill out. If it is going somewhere that gets grubby — a hallway, a child’s room — keep a washable throw over it rather than trying to wash the cushion.

Materials

Jumbo-cord polyester cover — a wide, chunky corduroy rib with a soft brushed nap — over a tufted PP-cotton fill, built as a boxed cushion with a pouffed side edge roughly 10 cm deep. Nine panels are tufted right through from the top face to the base rather than surface-stitched, which compartmentalises the fill and is the reason it holds its height. Warm walnut-carame color across all three sizes, so sizes can be mixed without mixing shades.

Two walnut Settle floor cushions beside a low live-edge oak table on a warm microcement floor

Eleven minutes, then your tailbone

That is roughly how long a bare floor stays comfortable before your tailbone and ankles start negotiating. The fix is not a thicker rug — it is height. Around 10 cm of boxed fill underneath you, holding its shape, keeps the pelvis level and the legs awake, so an evening at the low table stays an evening rather than a series of position changes.

Stitched through so it stays even

Nine tufted panels pass right through the cushion, top face to base, locking the fill into nine compartments. That is what stops the filling drifting outward into the edges and leaving a hollow in the middle — the way most floor cushions quietly go flat and lumpy within a month. It compresses a centimetre or two when you sit, then holds.

Three sizes, one warm walnut

40 × 40 cm for a hard dining or kitchen chair. 45 × 45 cm for sitting cross-legged on the floor. 50 × 50 cm for a full floor seat, a window ledge, or the top of a low stool. All three in the same jumbo-cord walnut, so you can mix sizes around one low table without mixing looks.

Finally sit at the low table without fidgeting

We eat at a low table two or three nights a week and I used to be shifting about constantly by the time the food arrived. Bought two of the 45 cm and it's a completely different evening — you sit level and your feet don't go to sleep. It compresses maybe a centimetre or two under me and then stops, which is exactly what you want. The cord is nicer in person than on screen.

Ordered the small one, ended up using them as chair pads

Got the 40 cm for the floor and they've ended up on our kitchen chairs instead, which are wooden and brutal after twenty minutes. Perfect thickness for that. Fair warning though: 40 cm is genuinely small for sitting cross-legged on the floor, your knees hang off the edge. If that's the plan, get the 45 or the 50.

Holds its shape, which is the whole test

I've had two floor cushions before that went flat and lumpy inside a month. This one has been in daily use since spring and still has its height — I assume because the tufting goes all the way through instead of just being stitched on the surface. Colour is a warm mid-brown, a shade more caramel than it looked on my screen. There's no zip-off cover, so plan on spot-cleaning it.

Frequently asked questions

Which size should I get?
45 × 45 cm is the one most people want: big enough to sit cross-legged on without your knees hanging off, small enough to stack two beside a low table. Choose 40 × 40 cm if it's going on a dining or kitchen chair, or it's for a child — as a floor seat for an adult it is noticeably tight. Choose 50 × 50 cm if you want a full floor seat, a window-ledge pad or something that doubles as a low footstool top. All three are the same thickness, roughly 10 cm; only the footprint changes.
Will it stay thick, or go flat like other floor cushions?
It compresses a centimetre or two when you first sit and then holds. The reason is the construction rather than the filling: the nine panels are tufted right through from the top face to the base, so the fill is locked into nine compartments and can't drift outward to the edges. That drift is what creates the classic hollow in the middle after a fortnight. It is a boxed cushion, not a beanbag, so expect firm support rather than a sink-in feel.
Can I take the cover off and wash it?
No — the tufting passes through the cover and the fill together, so there is no separate zip-off cover. Clean it in place: vacuum the ribs with the brush head, then spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth and a little mild detergent, working along the direction of the rib rather than against it. Press the moisture out with a dry towel and let it dry flat and away from direct heat. If it will live somewhere that gets grubby — a hallway, a kids' room — a washable throw over it is the sensible move.
Will it slide on a hard floor or a wooden chair?
Much less than a smooth cotton or velvet cushion. The jumbo cord has a deep rib and a soft nap that catches on microcement, wood and tile, and the flat boxed base gives it a proper footprint to sit on rather than a rounded edge that rocks. It isn't a rubber-backed non-slip pad, so on very glossy polished stone or a slippery lacquered chair seat it can still shift if you drop onto it hard. There are no ties for fixing it to a chair back.
What is the colour actually like?
A warm mid walnut-caramel brown — the kind of brown that sits happily next to oak, jute, cream plaster and terracotta rather than fighting them. Because corduroy has a nap, the ribs read a little lighter where the pile catches the light and darker in the valleys, so the surface shifts slightly as you move around it. On a cool-calibrated screen it can look flatter and greyer than it is; in warm room light it is closer to caramel.
Is it firm enough for an adult, or is it really a child's cushion?
It is built for an adult. Roughly 10 cm of tufted fill in a boxed shape carries a grown adult sitting cross-legged and keeps the pelvis clear of the floor, which is the whole job — that is why the height matters more than the footprint. Sizing is the thing to get right: an adult sitting cross-legged wants 45 × 45 cm or 50 × 50 cm. It is not a mattress or a meditation zafu, so it won't tilt the pelvis forward the way a sloped meditation cushion does; it is a flat, level seat.
