Overview

Most bedside clocks solve the wrong problem. A glowing screen keeps the room half-lit all night; a ticking one keeps it half-awake. Patina™ does neither. The dial is aged parchment with tall black numerals — 13 cm across, so you read it from the pillow without reaching for glasses — behind domed glass in a dark-bronze metal case that carries real copper wear on its edges. The movement sweeps in silence. The dial stays dark until you switch on the backlight, then goes dark again. A small hinged loop on top lifts it onto a hook if you'd rather hang it than stand it. Nothing about it asks for your attention until you ask for the time.

Care

Dust the case with a soft dry cloth. The aged bronze finish is meant to look worn, so skip polishes and abrasives — they'll strip the copper highlights that give it its depth. Clean the glass with a barely damp cloth. Remove the battery if you're storing it for a season.

Materials

Pressed metal case in an aged dark-bronze finish with warm copper edge highlights, domed glass face, aged-parchment printed dial with black Arabic numerals and ornate filigree hands, two solid metal sphere feet and a hinged copper-tone carry loop. Silent sweep quartz movement with a switch-on dial backlight. Battery powered — battery not included. Size: 13.2 cm wide × 13.5 cm tall × 4.8 cm deep (5.2 × 5.3 × 1.9 in); 18 cm / 7.1 in tall with the loop raised. Weight approx. 350 g.

Readable without your glasses

A 13 cm dial, tall black numerals, pale parchment behind them. You read it from the pillow at a glance instead of squinting, reaching, or picking up a phone to find out it's only 3am.

Light only when you ask

The dial stays dark all night, then lights when you switch it on. No permanent glow bleeding across the ceiling, no display fighting your melatonin at 2am.

Replaced a clock that glowed all night

My old digital one lit the whole ceiling blue. This sits dark until I flick the light on, and the numbers are big enough that I don't fumble for glasses. First week I noticed I stopped waking at 4am.

Heavier than I expected, in a good way

It's proper metal, not tin — the two ball feet keep it planted and the bronze has real wear on the rim rather than a printed-on fake. Sits well next to oak and a linen lampshade.

Genuinely silent

I'm a light sleeper and I've returned two clocks for ticking. Put my ear right against this one and there's nothing. The second hand just glides.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the clock?
13.2 cm wide, 13.5 cm tall and 4.8 cm deep (5.2 × 5.3 × 1.9 in) standing on its feet — about the span of a spread hand. With the carry loop lifted it measures 18 cm / 7.1 in tall.
Does it tick?
No. It uses a silent sweep movement — the second hand glides continuously rather than stepping, so there's no click to lie awake counting.
How does the night light work?
A switch on the back turns on a soft backlight behind the dial so you can read it in a dark room. It's off by default, so nothing glows at you all night unless you want it to.
Can it hang on a wall?
Yes. The copper-tone loop on top is hinged — fold it down and the clock stands on its two ball feet, or lift it and hang the clock from a hook or a picture nail.
What powers it?
A battery, not included. There's no cable and nothing to charge, so it can live on a shelf, a mantel or a nightstand nowhere near a socket.
Is the worn finish a defect?
No — it's the point. The case is finished in dark bronze with copper showing through on the raised edges and rim, so each one has slightly different wear. Don't polish it; that's what gives it depth beside oak and linen.
