Why the light is this soft

The white is fused inside the glass, not sprayed on it, so light travels through the wall of the dome and leaves already diffused - no hot spot, no visible bulbA 12 mm tempered glass base and a low centre of gravity mean a caught cable slides it instead of tipping it, unlike a top-heavy fabric shadeA mechanical ball-chain switch on the neck - nothing to pair, nothing to fail, and no standby LED glowing at you at three in the morning

A solid dome of hand-blown opal glass on a chrome-plated steel column and a tempered glass base. The white is fused inside the glass, so a single warm bulb comes out as an even, low pool of light with no hot spot and no visible filament. Pull-chain switch. Two sizes, E27 fitting, bulb not included.

Overview

Most bedside lamps get one of two things wrong. Either the shade is thin enough that the bulb burns through it as a bright spot you can see from the pillow, or it is so opaque that all the light goes at the ceiling and you still cannot read. Opal is the old answer to that problem: a solid dome of glass that turns one bulb into an even, low, honey-coloured pool.

Opal glass is not frosted glass and it is not white plastic. The white is inside the material - a milky layer fused between two clear ones - so the light does not bounce off a coating on the surface, it travels through the wall of the dome and comes out the other side already softened. That is why there is no hot spot, no visible filament, and no hard edge where the light stops. With a warm 2700K bulb the whole dome glows at roughly the brightness of a candle held close.

Underneath, the column is chrome-plated steel over a clear sleeve, and the base is a 12 mm disc of tempered glass with the green cut edge left showing. The weight matters more than it sounds: at 3.8 kg the large one slides rather than topples when you catch the cable with your foot, and the low centre of gravity means a duvet dragging past it will not put it on the floor. The switch is a ball chain on the neck - no app, no touch sensor to fail, no standby light glowing at you in the dark.

Two sizes doing two different jobs. 18 cm across and 36 cm tall is the bedside one: it clears a stack of books and lights the page without lighting the room. 28 cm across and 47 cm tall is closer to furniture - a hallway console, a sideboard, the end of a long desk - and it will hold a corner on its own. Both take a standard E27 screw bulb, not included, and both ship with the plug you choose.

Care

Wipe the dome with a barely damp microfibre cloth and dry it straight away. The glass is fired white all the way through so it cannot lose its colour, but water spots show on a matte surface. Keep glass cleaner and anything ammonia-based off the chrome - it pits the plating over time - and use a dry cloth on the column instead. Let the bulb cool before you handle the dome. If the ball chain ever feels gritty, a single drop of light oil at the neck and a few gentle pulls will free it; do not force it.

Materials

Hand-blown opal glass dome; chrome-plated steel column over a clear sleeve; 12 mm tempered glass disc base with a polished green cut edge; mechanical ball-chain rotary switch; cable with inline strain relief. Takes one E27 screw-fit bulb, 40 W maximum, not included - the light is designed around a warm 2700K filament or LED. Verified sizes: the small is 18 cm across the dome and 36 cm to the top; the large is 28 cm across and 47 cm to the top.

Opal™ Table Lamp lit on an oak bedside table in a warm plaster bedroom

Enough light to read by

On a bedside table it clears a stack of books and puts a warm pool on the page without waking the rest of the room. The dome sends light down and sideways rather than up at the ceiling, which is the difference between reading and squinting.

A hand pulling the ball-chain switch on the Opal™ Table Lamp

One pull, no menus

The switch is a ball chain on the neck of the lamp. You find it in the dark by feel, in the second before you are properly awake - no phone, no app, no touch pad that comes on when the cat brushes past.

Glass, steel and weight

An opal glass dome, a chrome-plated steel column, and a 12 mm tempered glass disc underneath. At 3.8 kg it stays where you put it, and there is no plastic anywhere you can see or touch.

Bought it for the glare, staying for the glass

I have astigmatism and most bedside lamps give me a starburst off the bulb. This one genuinely does not - the dome is thick enough that you cannot pick out a filament at all, just an even glow. Got the small one for a narrow nightstand and it fits with room for a book. Heavier than I expected, in a good way.

The large one is larger than you think

28 cm across sounds modest on a screen. In person it is a proper object and it did not fit the nightstand, which is entirely on me for not measuring. Moved it to the hall console where it looks right and lights the whole corner. No bulb in the box - worth knowing before it arrives on a Friday night.

The chain is the best part

Sounds daft but the pull chain is why I kept it. No fumbling for a phone, no touch pad going off on its own. It clicks, it is on. Chrome has stayed clean with a dry cloth and the glass base hides dust far better than the brushed metal one it replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Does it come with a bulb?
No. It takes one standard E27 screw-fit bulb up to 40 W, and we leave it out because the bulb is most of the character of this lamp. For the light in our photographs, use a warm 2700K LED filament at around 400 lumens. Anything above 3000K makes the opal glass read grey rather than honey, which is the one thing that will spoil it.
Which size should I get?
The 18 cm dome at 36 cm tall is the bedside and desk size - it clears a stack of books and lights a page without lighting the room. The 28 cm dome at 47 cm tall is closer to furniture: a hallway console, a sideboard, the end of a long desk. It will hold a corner on its own but it needs about 35 cm of clear depth, so measure the surface before you commit.
Is the shade real glass or plastic?
Real hand-blown opal glass, which is why the box is heavy. Opal is not the same as frosted - the white is fused inside the wall of the glass rather than etched or sprayed onto the surface, so light is diffused as it passes through rather than scattered off a coating. It also means it cannot scratch off when you dust it, fog in a warm room, or yellow in sunlight the way an acrylic shade does.
How is it switched on?
A mechanical ball-chain pull switch on the neck, just under the dome. One pull on, one pull off. There is no app, no remote, no touch sensor and no standby LED, which is deliberate - every one of those is something that either fails or glows at you in the dark. If you want it dimmable, use a dimmable bulb with a plug-in dimmer on the lead.
Will it tip over?
It is built not to. The base is a 12 mm disc of tempered glass and the large lamp is 3.8 kg with most of that weight at the bottom, so catching the cable with your foot slides it rather than topples it. It is still glass, though - we would not put it on a table a toddler can reach, or on a narrow shelf where a knock sends it off the edge.
Which plug will I get?
Choose UK, EU or US at checkout and that is the plug fitted to the lead - no adaptor in the box and none needed. The lamp itself runs on 100 to 240 V, so if you move country later you only need the correct lead rather than a new lamp.
