Overview

This is one solid casting, not a fake fruit with something stuck to it. The banana and the tape come out of the same mould, so the tape has real cut ends, real crinkles and a woven scrim texture pressed into it, and the whole piece is rigid enough to pick up by either end.

It goes where a picture would be slightly too serious — the end of a gallery wall, above a kitchen shelf, a downstairs loo, the turn of a staircase. And it does the one thing a real banana cannot: it stays exactly this yellow, permanently, without attracting fruit flies.

Care

Dust with a soft dry cloth. For anything more, a barely damp cloth wiped over the yellow and dried straight away is enough — the lacquer is sealed but not armoured, and standing moisture at the join between fruit and tape is where paint lifts first.

Never use solvent, alcohol wipes, kitchen degreaser or anything abrasive. They will dull the yellow in patches and take the dull-aluminium finish off the tape, both of which are far more visible than dust. Skip furniture polish too; the sheen it leaves reads as plastic and never fully comes off.

Keep it out of long direct sunlight — yellow pigment fades first and it will go pale over a few summers in a south-facing window. Kitchens are fine; a spot back from the hob and out of the steam plume is better. When mounting, clean and dry the wall first and press the adhesive strips for the full time the pack states, then leave it an hour before letting go.

Materials

One-piece solid cast polyresin — banana and tape strip are a single casting, not two parts joined. The fruit is hand-painted in layered ripe-yellow lacquer with brown freckling, green stem shading and a dark blossom tip; the tape strip is painted a dull aluminium and textured to match woven duct tape, including cut ends and creases. The back of the tape strip is left flat and unpainted as the mounting face.

Approximately 22 cm across the tape and 18 cm tall, weighing around 600 g as shipped. The maker publishes no dimension drawing for this piece, so those figures are derived from the 25 × 25 × 15 cm shipping carton and should be treated as close rather than exact. One size, one colourway.

No fixings are included. It is cast resin, not ceramic or bronze — it will chip on a hard floor rather than shatter, and being hand-painted, freckle placement and the exact depth of the yellow vary slightly from piece to piece.

The reverse of the moulded tape strip is flat and unpainted and gives you roughly 22 cm of straight bearing surface, so two or three good-quality strips — the removable picture-hanging kind rated for a kilo or more — hold it dead level. Clean and dry the wall first, press for the full time the pack states, then leave it an hour before letting go. There is no keyhole slot, bracket or drilling involved.
Are the fixings included?
No, and we would rather say so before you order than have you open the box and find out. It ships as the sculpture only. Any removable adhesive wall strip rated for a kilo will do the job — they cost very little and most people already have a pack in a drawer. If your wall is bare plaster, textured masonry or freshly painted, adhesive will not grip well; give new paint a fortnight to cure first.

Will mine look exactly like the photographs?
The shape, size and colourway will. The freckling will not. It is hand-painted, so the placement of the brown speckles, the exact depth of yellow and the amount of green at the stem shift a little from piece to piece — that variation is why it reads as fruit rather than as a printed prop. Our photographs are styled shots, so judge the scale from the measurements rather than from the room settings.
Can it go in a kitchen or a bathroom?
Yes to both, with a little sense.
