Overview

A clock is the only object in a room that makes a noise all day whether you want it to or not. Second, second, second — you stop hearing it by four in the afternoon and hear nothing else at two in the morning. Hush™ is built the other way round: the second hand glides instead of stepping, and the room stays quiet.

The movement is a continuous-sweep quartz rather than the stepping kind. A stepping movement jerks the hand forward once a second, and the click you hear is the escapement landing. A sweep movement drives it in one unbroken motion, so there is no landing and no click. It runs on a single AA — not included, because the cell packed in with a clock is usually half dead already — and a fresh alkaline gives roughly a year.

The dial sits behind tempered glass, not the thin acrylic most wall clocks use: it takes a knock, does not fog, and will not scratch and yellow the way acrylic does after two summers on a sunny wall. The numerals are separate raised pieces standing proud of the face, so each one throws its own small shadow and the time reads at a glance instead of a squint. The frame is satin ABS, 4.5 cm deep, and the 25 cm weighs under half a kilo — one nail or one adhesive hook holds it.

Three sizes doing three different jobs. 20 cm for a hallway, a desk wall or the space above a door. 25 cm is the one most people end up wanting — readable from the sofa, small enough not to take over the wall. 30 cm for a kitchen or an open-plan room where you are reading it from three metres away with your hands full.

Care

Dust the glass with a dry microfibre cloth. If it needs more than that, breathe on it and wipe — do not spray anything at it, because liquid running down the bezel can find its way behind the lens. Avoid solvents and any glass cleaner containing ammonia; they will dull the satin frame permanently. If the clock starts losing time, it is almost always the battery rather than the movement, so change the AA before assuming anything worse. Take the battery out if it is going into storage for more than a few months — a leaking cell is the one thing that will finish it off.

Materials

Satin-finish ABS frame, tempered glass lens, printed dial with separate raised ABS numerals, and metal hour, minute and second hands on a continuous-sweep quartz movement. Powered by one AA battery, not included. Verified sizes: 8 in / 20 cm, 10 in / 25 cm and 12 in / 30 cm across the frame, all 4.5 cm deep; the 20 cm weighs about 480 g. A single keyhole slot is moulded into the back panel, so one nail, screw or adhesive hook is all the fixing it needs.

Hush Clock above an oak shelf in a warm minimal kitchen

It disappears into the room

Hung above a shelf, over a door or beside a kitchen window, it does its job without asking for the wall. Nothing to plug in, no cable, no glow — one AA behind the back panel and a keyhole slot that takes a single nail.

Hands settling the Hush Clock onto a brass wall hook

Up in about a minute

Drop in the battery, set the time with the wheel on the back, and hang it. At under half a kilo it does not need a wall plug or a bracket — a nail or a decent adhesive hook is enough, and the keyhole slot lets you nudge it level once it is on.

Hush Clock detail callouts: tempered glass face, raised 3D numerals, silent sweep movement

Glass, not acrylic

A tempered glass lens over raised numerals and metal hands, driven by a sweep movement. It is the difference between a clock that still looks right in three years and one that has gone cloudy and started clicking.

Bought it for the bedroom, silent as promised

We had a ticker in here before and I genuinely used to lie awake counting it. Put my ear right against this one and there is a very faint whirr, nothing you can hear from the bed. Got the 25 cm in all white and it reads fine from across the room without the light on, once your eyes adjust.

Order the 30 cm for a kitchen

I bought the 25 first and it looked small on a big wall, so I ordered the 30 as well and moved the smaller one to the hall. Both fine. The numbers are actually raised, which I didn't expect at this price, and the glass feels like glass rather than plastic.

Bring your own battery

No AA in the box, which is stated but I still managed not to read it and had a clock on the wall showing the wrong time for two days. Once it was in, it has kept time exactly and been completely silent. Black frame version, the white face is very slightly warm rather than stark, which suited us.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really silent, or just quieter?
There is no tick at all — the second hand sweeps continuously rather than stepping, so there is no escapement click to make one. If you hold it to your ear you can hear a faint whirr from the motor, the same as any sweep clock. From a metre away it is silent, which is the point: it can go in a bedroom or a nursery without anyone noticing it is there.
Which size should I choose?
8 in / 20 cm suits a hallway, a desk wall, a small bathroom or the space above a door. 10 in / 25 cm is the one most people want — comfortably readable from a sofa or a bed without dominating the wall. 12 in / 30 cm is for kitchens and open-plan rooms where you are reading it from three metres away, often with your hands full. All three are 4.5 cm deep.
Does it come with a battery?
No. It takes one AA and we do not include it, because the cells shipped with clocks have usually been sitting in a warehouse for a year and die within weeks. Put in a fresh alkaline and you should get around twelve months. Rechargeables work but run at a slightly lower voltage, so they need changing more often.
How do I hang it?
A keyhole slot is moulded into the back panel, so it drops onto a single nail, screw or adhesive hook — no bracket, no wall plug needed on plaster. The 20 cm weighs about 480 g and the 30 cm is still under a kilo, so a decent stick-on hook rated for 1 kg will hold it if you would rather not put a nail in the wall.
Is the face real glass?
Yes — tempered glass, not the acrylic sheet used on most clocks at this price. It matters more than it sounds: acrylic scratches when you dust it, fogs in a steamy kitchen or bathroom, and yellows in direct sun. Tempered glass does none of those things, and if it ever does take a hard enough hit it breaks into blunt granules rather than shards.
Can I use it in a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes for both, within reason. The glass lens and sealed back panel handle the humidity of a normal kitchen or a family bathroom without fogging. What it is not is outdoor-rated — don't hang it in an unheated porch or a garden room where it will get condensation on the movement overnight, and keep it off the wall directly above a hob or a kettle.
