Overview

Most wall clocks announce themselves. A white disc, a black bezel, a chrome ring — the sort of thing you stop noticing on the wall during the day and start hearing at two in the morning.

Cairn™ is built as two overlapping stones instead. The larger face is finished in pale travertine with slim brown numerals set right out at the edge, and a soft off-white moon disc is raised over its right-hand side so the dial has actual depth rather than a printed look. A smaller, darker pebble laps over the bottom corner and breaks the outline, which is what stops it reading as just another round clock.

Behind it is a continuous-sweep quartz movement: the second hand glides rather than steps, so a bedroom or a study stays silent. One AA battery, one keyhole on the back, and three sizes from 29.7 cm up to 39.5 cm across so it can sit over a sideboard or hold a bare wall on its own.

Care

Dust with a dry soft cloth, or a clean dry make-up brush to get in around the numerals. For a mark, use a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away — the board core does not like standing moisture, so never soak it and never use spray cleaner or anything abrasive. Change the battery once a year rather than waiting for it to die, and take the clock off the wall to do it so you are not working overhead.

A single keyhole slot on the back drops over one screw or picture hook — no bracket, no template. Because the outline is irregular, a millimetre off level does not show, which is more forgiving than a round clock.

Which size should I get?
Measure the wall, not the clock. Above a sideboard or a console the 12 in (29.7 cm) is enough. For a bare wall with nothing else on it, or a hallway you read it from a distance, take the 16 in (39.5 cm). The 14 in (34.7 cm) is the safe middle if you are unsure.
Does it tick?
No. It uses a continuous-sweep quartz movement, so the second hand glides round rather than stepping once a second. There is no audible click even in a silent bedroom, which is the whole reason we chose this movement over the cheaper stepping kind.
Is it real stone?
No, and that is deliberate. The travertine effect is finished onto laminated wood board, which brings the whole clock in at around 640 g. Real stone at this size would be several kilos and would need a proper wall fixing rather than a single hook.
How does it hang?
There is one keyhole slot moulded into the back. It drops straight over a single screw head or an ordinary picture hook — no bracket and no template needed. The irregular outline means a slight lean does not read as crooked the way it would on a round clock.
Is a battery included?
No — it takes one AA, which we leave out because batteries cannot be shipped inside the clock everywhere. Fit a fresh alkaline AA rather than a part-used one and expect roughly a year. A sweep movement draws a little more than a stepping one.
Will it suit a dark or a colourful wall?
It is happiest on warm cream, limewash, plaster or a soft olive, where the sandy tones sit into the wall rather than fighting it. On a strong dark wall it reads as a bright pale shape, which can work as a deliberate contrast — but the brown numerals lose some of their softness.
