The lid does the work

Cache is a boucle drum on four splayed wood posts, with a lid that lifts away to a lined storage cavity beneath.

Turn that lid over and its underside is a flat wood disc — the same object works as a footstool, a lidded box or a small side table, depending on which way up you leave it. Chalk, Ink or Blush.

Overview

Small rooms are not short of surfaces or short of seats. They are short of both, in the same square foot, at different times of day.

This is one object that answers whichever question the evening asks. Feet up before dinner, a cup and a book after, and everything that was on the floor put away underneath the whole time.

Care

Vacuum the loops gently. Never pull a snagged loop — cut it flush.

A shallow well, not a trunk

What the cavity holds

That's a shallow round well, not a trunk — two or three large-format books lie flat in it with room over the top. So do remotes, chargers, a pack of cards, a rolled throw, knitting, or the small mess that lives on a coffee table until someone visits.

It suits flat, low items rather than anything bulky or upright, like a duvet or a laptop bag — the shallow depth is the honest trade that keeps the whole piece low and light.

Loops, chosen over a flat pile

Boucle, and its one weakness

The yarn is looped rather than cut, so the surface reads as texture from across a room and hides creasing in a way flat upholstery cannot. It also means it does not crush where you put your heels.

The weakness is snagging. A claw, a watch strap or a zip can pull one loop proud of the rest. Cut it off level with scissors and it vanishes; pull it and you will take four more with it.

Cache used as a footstool on a jute rug in front of a low linen sofa

Low on purpose

How low it stands

It sits below sofa-seat height, which is exactly where feet want to be and exactly wrong for sitting at a table — treat it as a footstool that happens to take an adult's weight, rather than a dining chair that happens to be soft.

The legs splay outward past the edge of the drum, so it sits wider on the floor than it looks and stays steady when you push off it to stand.

The wood side gets more use

I bought it to put my feet on and it has been wood side up since about week two. Coffee, phone, whatever. I flip it back when someone comes round and wants to sit on it. Did not expect that to be the main appeal.

Cat found it first

Ours sleeps on it every afternoon and there is now a slightly flattened patch and two pulled loops. Trimmed them and you cannot see it. If you have claws in the house, go in knowing that.

Legs arrive off

Four wooden posts and four bolts in a bag, screwed in by hand in under five minutes. No tools needed. Worth mentioning because the listing photo shows it built and I had assumed it came that way.

Frequently asked questions

Is the lid attached?
It's loose by design, which is what makes the reversing work — it sits down into the rim rather than clipping on, so it won't blow off, though a determined toddler can still lift it.
Can I put a hot mug straight on the wood?
Grab a coaster — it's a finished wood surface rather than a heatproof one, and a heat ring is the one mark that won't sand or polish away.
What is the boucle made of?
A synthetic looped yarn over foam — no wool content is claimed, since we can't verify one, so treat it as a fully synthetic weave rather than a natural-fibre piece.
Which wood are the legs?
Solid wood, pale and straight-grained, with a clear finish. The species is not specified to us so we do not name one. Tone varies a little between pieces.
Is Blush very pink?
It is a muted dusty pink rather than a bright one, and boucle mutes it further because the loops throw their own shadows. It sits closer to clay than to candy.
