The trouble with most pendants is that the shade is too shallow to do its job. Sit down at the counter, glance up, and there is the filament — a hard bright point sitting in your eye-line, flattening the food underneath it and leaving you squinting through dinner.

Brim™ is a 26 cm enamelled steel barn dome, 20 cm deep, with the socket set high up inside it. The bulb sits well back under the rolled rim, so from any normal standing or seated height you see the light and not the source. The warm-white enamel lining bounces almost all of it straight back down: a bright circle on the worktop rather than a glare across the room.

Hung 70–75 cm above a counter or a table it lights a working surface properly — enough to chop by and read by — while the rest of the room stays soft and low. The braided cord runs 100 cm and shortens at the canopy, so it sits right under a low ceiling or a high one.

Care

Switch off at the wall and let the bulb cool before you touch the shade. Enamel wipes clean with a soft damp cloth and dries back to a shine — no cream cleaner, no scouring pad, nothing abrasive, or you will dull the glaze. Buff the brass with a dry cloth only and leave the natural patina; it deepens with age. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

How high should I hang it?
70–75 cm from the worktop or tabletop up to the bottom rim. That is where the bulb disappears from both a standing and a seated eye-line while the pool of light still covers a full place setting. The 100 cm cord shortens at the canopy if your ceiling is low.
Is a bulb included?
Yes, Warm LED Included comes with a 7 W 2700K warm-white LED — the tone shown in our photographs. A clear filament bulb also looks good against the white lining.
How big is it, really?
The shade is 26 cm across and 20 cm tall — about the width of a dinner plate and a little deeper than a cereal bowl. It is smaller than most people picture from a photograph, which is why a run of two or three over an island reads better than one on its own.
Can I fit it myself?
It is a hardwired ceiling fitting rather than a plug-in lamp. It mounts at a standard ceiling rose and the 10 cm canopy covers the fixing, but the wiring itself should be done by a qualified electrician — usually well under an hour of work.
Will the enamel chip or yellow?
Vitreous enamel is glass fired onto steel, so it is far harder than paint and it will not yellow or scorch above a hob. It can chip on a sharp knock, as any enamel can, so keep it clear of the swing of an open cupboard door. Everyday cleaning will not mark it.
Which colour works where?
Chalk White throws the most light and all but disappears against a cream or limewash ceiling. Charcoal reads almost black in daylight and gives a pale kitchen one defined dark point. Stone Grey sits between the two and is the easiest of the three against oak and warm plaster.
